The honest take

What the plan doesn't tell you

• Your mortise and tenon joints must be precise. Make several test cuts on scrap wood before touching your project pieces, especially when setting up the dado stack and router.
• During assembly, keeping the 22×22 frame perfectly square is critical. Use clamping cauls to distribute pressure evenly and measure diagonally corner-to-corner to check for square before the glue sets.
• Be careful with the shoulder plane when fitting tenons. It’s easy to remove too much material, which creates a loose joint. Aim for a snug, friction fit before applying any glue.
• The tool list is serious. If you aren’t comfortable setting up and using a dado stack or a router for joinery, this project will be a significant challenge.

This is a solid plan. Using mortise and tenon joinery is the correct approach for this style; it provides the strength you'll need at the leg and apron joints. The choice of White Oak is classic and durable for a high-traffic piece like a coffee table. I'm glad to see the plan includes specific orientation guidance in six of the steps, which is critical for getting a clean look and strong joints. For an intermediate builder, this is a well-structured project that teaches fundamental skills.

Engineering Notes

The structural reality. We checked the part that works hardest here — the white oak tabletop — as a loaded beam over its real working span. Under a realistic in-use load it barely flexes — well within furniture limits, deflecting only about 1/23273 of its span, with bending stress at roughly 2% of what the wood allows. In short, it should feel firm and stay that way.

Solid for its purpose. Our conservative estimate puts the safe working load at ~250 lbs — enough for everyday meals and projects — even someone perching on the edge. Real-world strength depends just as much on assembly: glue every joint, keep the frame square, and drive your fasteners fully home.

Build tips

Before you build

  • Mill all your leg and apron stock at the same time to guarantee uniform thickness. This is non-negotiable for getting the mortise and tenon joints to line up perfectly.
  • Always do a complete dry-fit assembly before reaching for the glue. This is your chance to find and fix any tight or loose joints and to make sure you have enough clamps ready for the final glue-up.
