The honest take
What the plan doesn't tell you
• Douglas Fir can have large, loose knots. Inspect your boards and avoid placing knots near your pocket screw joints, as they can compromise strength.
• Your tabletop will only be as flat as your cuts are straight. Use a high-quality straightedge guide for your circular saw to prevent gaps between the boards.
• When assembling the base, clamp the leg and apron joints securely before driving any screws. Measure diagonally from corner to corner to confirm the assembly is perfectly square before moving on.
• This table will be heavy. Attaching the top to the base is a two-person job. Don’t try to flip the final table by yourself or you risk breaking a leg joint.
This is a solid, straightforward plan for a beginner. The use of Douglas Fir is smart for a rustic look on a budget, but know that it's a softwood that will dent easily. Relying on pocket screws for the main structure is fine, but you must use wood glue in every joint to ensure it doesn't start to wobble over time. The plan is smart to include orientation guidance in four steps, which is critical for getting the base square. I'd double-check the 28-inch final height; it's a bit lower than a standard dining table, so make sure your chairs will fit.

The structural reality. We checked the part that works hardest here — the Douglas fir tabletop board — as a loaded beam over its real working span. Under a realistic in-use load it barely flexes — well within furniture limits, deflecting only about 1/3280 of its span, with bending stress at roughly 14% of what the wood allows. In short, it should feel firm and stay that way.
Solid for its purpose. Our conservative estimate puts the safe working load at ~300 lbs — enough for everyday meals and projects — even someone perching on the edge. Real-world strength depends just as much on assembly: glue every joint, keep the frame square, and drive your fasteners fully home.

Build tips
Before you build
- Before drilling your project pieces, use a scrap piece of Douglas Fir to test your Kreg Jig's depth setting. This guarantees your screws seat correctly without poking through.
- To prevent a splotchy finish, apply a pre-stain wood conditioner to all parts before staining. Douglas Fir is known for absorbing stain unevenly and this step makes a huge difference.
- Use a right-angle clamp when joining the aprons to the legs. It will hold the joint at a perfect 90 degrees while you drive the pocket screws, which is the best way to keep the base square.
